If you're following me on Facebook or Flickr you already have noticed I posted many new images recently. I also updated my website, event though I probably will change the image layout as soon as possible - I'm currently working on a new watercolored image for it! Anyway, I'd like to give you some extra information about the latest illustrations, I know people are usually quite curious about the process of making a new image.
Let's start with 'Like a Fairy tale...' or 'In a Forest pitch Dark' - you see, I have two titles for the same image ^_^ Ok, the second one is actually taken from a song by Bjork...so, this is not my own work ^_^

This image is strongly based on another one I did almost a year ago. You can read about it there. I liked so much the crown that I thought to draw again it! Though, this time I didn't draw a fanart, but a character of mine, another fairytale inspired maiden...I'm quite obsessive with old folktales, you see ^_^ This time, I wanted to focus more on the dichotomy between light and dark. There's not any religious or deep meaning in this, it's just an artistic/aesthetic choice. And I hope you'll like the illustration!

And a little bit about 'Flora', too. I have a weakness for European natural history paintings and their subjects. I love drawing nature. I suppose this was the main reason for why I decide to draw fairy subjects, years ago. Anyway, I drew 'Flora' for a charity project. I will give you more information on this soon!

Finally, on August 3rd I got a new Daily Deviation on deviantart and 'Floating on a Sweet Lullaby' was Daily Art of the Day on EBSQ main site. It was a very nice surprise...especially because I realized about the DD only three days after I got it ^_^ Ah, busy times!

As mentioned in a previous post, in May I did an art trade with the talented Lara Dann. She mailed me her painting a month ago, but I could only see it - and took a photo of this marvelous acrylics on wood piece - few days ago when I come back hometown for a few days.
And, here it is! Thank you so much, Lara!

And, probably you remember of the illustration I did for the art trade. It was 'Sea Maiden'. After much search I could also find a wonderful frame to use - actually the original size of this image is not the standard one so, it wasn't easy to find it! And well, when I was framing the image I was so clumsy to damage it a little bit...well, that is all about me, I mean, I'm all thumbs sometimes!

I couldn't ship the old illustration so I finally decided to do another, new one. Same theme and feeling, as you can see ... just a little bit different. So, now the question is, which one do you prefer? Anyway, I mailed Lara the second one!

I'm not too much a fan of Pin-Up genre but, since I have been invited to participate in a new art-book - and the main theme is obviously, Pin-Ups! - I tried to sketch something. Honestly, if I can make a choice, I prefer doing illustrations that tell a story but well ... below my first sketch!

It's strongly based on 'Burlesque', an illustration I did in 2005. I like it, I probably could suggest to use this one for the book, instead of doing something new ^_^

Ok, it's time to update the blog and post some new art! Let's start with my latest illustration - done for fun, in my spare time. It's a new fairytale princess even though I have not found a name for her or a suitable fairytale yet...anyway, here she is!

Oriental Splendor - markers, pastels and gouache. I used a lot of metallic gold gouache for her jewelry, unfortunately my scanner hates anything shining! I should take a photo of this piece! It looks much more better 'in real life'!

I posted this few days ago, it was my last deviation before I put my dA gallery on hiatus! And well, the first fan-art and, more important, the first HP fan-art I've ever done and posted on deviantArt! I can't wait for the movie!

Time for a new post! Let's start with some new images I recently did!
The first it's a sketch I drew in order to use it for the new layout of my website. I finally pick up another image for the site, anyway here the drawing.

A new post after weeks! Woah ^_^ Well, I didn't have so much time for updating the blog or browsing my online galleries, recently. Sorry, I hope to post more art in the next few days! Ok, meantime, let's start with a a character design from one of my countless comic book projects! started few months ago, abandoned, and resumed. As usual, so many ideas, so few time!

Few days ago, I completed my art trade with the super-talented painter, Lara Dann!
She asked for a Victorian maiden, something like 'Several Shades of Sunset'. I drew something quite different, a girl from the sea...it seems I like painting water, recently! And of course, I added a skull ^_^

I updated my website and I've just realized that I don't update it too much as in the past...that probably should give you a clue on how busy I'm in these days! Anyway, I love being busy with so many amazing projects so, you just need to be patient with me and my delayed updates and replies!

So, let's start with the new art!
This is an illustration made for an online art show at ANATA gallery. The show will open the 30th of April, you can also vote your favorite illustration online and...I'll give you more info soon! You can also see some 'in progress' photos of 'Aura' on a previous blog post.

Hello everybody!

After vaguely mentioning it in a couple of my previous posts, I can finally tell you a little bit more about one of the big projects that will keep me busy during the next months. It's a fantastic story for children written by my friend Estelle and it will be published by Norma Editorial in 2012.
Below, one of the sketches I drew when me and Estelle tried to submit the project to publishers. You can see Mina - the main character of the story - with her little friends. I'm uber-happy about this illustrated book, one of my not-so-secret dreams has always been to work on a book for children! Finally, the dream comes true!

The sketch for a new art-trade I'm doing with the amazing Lara Dann! She asked for one of my Victorian ladies and, here the Sea Mermaid!

A sketch for a new steampunk illustration. It will something like my latest 'AURA'.

And, last but not least the sketch of my entry for the third Gothology art-book. And yes, it's another portrait of the Little Mermaid!

April, time for art shows! Below, a photo taken at the Sakura 2011 Exhibition in Tokyo. [thank you, Ken!]. My illustration is at the right of Chelsea Greene Lewyta's pieces. So happy we are in the same show - I'm a huge fan of her work - and soon we both will be in a new collective art-book about emerging illustrators as well. Super happy!

It has been a shocking week in the world to say the least and I didn't feel like posting my usual silly entries and I was often offline on social networks - well, that's like me, I'm not a social networks obsessed! Anyway, sorry, sometimes we need a stop and take the time to reflect on what is going on around us.

I have some very, very exciting news about books and shows to come and I promise a detailed post as soon as all the bureaucratic things will be arranged. I can hardly wait to tell you anything ^_^
To entertain you meantime I'm posting some oil paintings - in progress - I've been working on recently.
This is my first attempt to do a 'realistic' portrait ! If you're following me on Facebook, you already know about this painting. I probably change the background and the girl's face isn't finished yet. I used a photo as reference.

This is a small painting I did for a friend. I love robins!

Below, the WIP of a small painting I would have liked to submit to the April show at Bear and Bird gallery. Theme of the show is the Brothers Grimm's popular folktales and this piece is based on the 'Juniper Tree' story. I had to stop painting it since meantime I have been contacted for some new projects - shows and books - and I couldn't paint it in time for the show. Oil paintings require so much time to be done that I decided to drew a new Juniper Tree illustration in markers and inks. Anyway, when I'll find the time, I'd like to complete this!

'Where does your inspiration come from?'

It's probably one of the most frequent questions I get. I can't give you an answer. I'm a very suggestible person, I mean, I get my inspiration virtually everywhere! I’m inspired by traveling overseas even though I can't always be traveling. I'm inspired by the talent around me, seeing what other artists are doing makes me want to be better and come up with new ideas! I find inspiration in music, nature, movies, comic books, whatever!
So, to make things easier to understand, I'm starting a new section of my journal 'A small handful of inspiring things'. I'll post regularly photos taken using my camera or my smartphone of things I like, places I've visited, objects, etc, etc. I hope you'll enjoy it and you'll find these photos inspirational as they're for me!

The Pre-Raphaelite post!

You'll probably know I'm a huge fan of Pre-Raphaelite Painting as a consequence of my love for Renaissance Painting and the 19th century so I couldn't miss the opportunity to visit this exhibition in Rome, focused on The Myth of Italy in Victorian England. The core of the show features paintings by Dante Gabriel Rossetti, Edward Burne-Jones and William Morris and explores the classicism of artists such as Frederick Leighton. There is also a section that focuses on the relationship between English works and Italian prototypes with paintings by Giotto, Botticelli, Tiziano, Veronese, Tintoretto and others.

A selection of the displayed works. Many come from Private Collections so it's really a big opportunity to see paintings that usually are not in museums or galleries.

Ok, and after all this Beauty, some photos of the first of a series of 4 illustrations based on Brothers Grimm's popular folktales. All the images will be done for 'Away in the Woods', an upcoming group art-show at Bear and Bird Gallery, US.

My next pieces will be based on the following tale: 'The Juniper Tree', 'Mother Hulda' and 'Snow White and Red Rose'. I'll put them up online in April, for the show.

From sketch to the final illustration...and yes, there's a bit of Pre-Raphaelites' art in my image too ^_-

I should start this post with a shocking confession: I don’t like Alice in Wonderland. Among all the popular traditional tales for children, is the one I like least of all. When I was a little girl, my grandpa was used to give me away a lot of books about popular fairytales and of course he gave me a copy of Alice in Wonderland. Actually, it’s a series of big, full colored illustrated albums. Illustrations were absolutely wonderful, but I didn’t like the story too much – I remember I had a strong antipathy towards many of the main characters. Probably I was too young to read and appreciate Alice, I was about 7 years old. It seems that reading experience shocked me ^_^ Though I have not bought any books about Alice over the years and yes, I have not seen the movie by Tim Burton, I couldn’t resist to buy 'The story of Alice in her Oxford Wonderland'. It’s beautifully illustrated and I’ve a weakness for anything that is a pleasure for the eyes ^_^

The book is about the Story of Alice Liddell - the 'real' Alice from the Alice in Wonderland stories - and her Oxford during the 19th century. I own the Italian version of the book, I suppose it's been translated into English too, but I'm afraid the book is currently out of stock.

As mentioned in a previous post, I've started working on a new sequential project. I can't say or show you too much apart from character/concept art or sketches though I can give you some few basic information ^_^

The graphic novel is based on a short story written by Estelle Valls de Gomis. We're working on a bunch of new projects with Estelle and that makes me think we should create a professional partnership sooner or later...
Anyway, 'Mademoiselle Rose' is a graphic novel book that will be published in France at the end of 2011. I'm sorry you have to wait for almost a whole year to read it but I have to draw, ink and handcolor a whole book - not just few pages for a group art-book or something - and that will take time, a lot of time ^_^

Some people asked me about an English translation of the book. I suppose the book will sell well, there would be a chance to have it translated into English....who knows!

Giving you few hints about how the comic book will be, I suggest you to visit this site. I love 'The Invention of Hugo Cabaret' and I'm working on something related to it as for layout and approach....more info soon! Stay tuned!

Books: Beauty and the Beast

Beauty and the Beast is the traditional fairy tale I love the most! And obviously I have an illustrated book about this beautiful tale. Being a very popular story and also adapted for screen, stage, prose, and television over the years, there're many illustrated books you can find on bookstores. Amongst many, my favorite is the one re-written by Max Eilenberg and illustrated by the talented Angela Barrett. Unlike the original, the story is set in 19th century. Illustrations are simply marvelous, I love them! I can't recommend this book enough!

And, I soon have another chance to work on Brothers Grimm popular tales since in April I'll be involved in a new Group Show at Bear and Bird Gallery and guess...the main theme of the show is Grimm's folktales ^_^

Imperial Blue

I have a passion to travel and I've always been fascinated by Middle East and Far East countries, I have traveled to a number of Asian countries, including Egypt, Jordan, Japan, China, India, Uzbekistan, etc, etc. Those travels have always inspired my illustrations, from the stunning vistas and landscapes to the spectacular buildings and art products I could see.

Despite that, it has been a while since the last time I've done an illustration having strong Asian references like the first image I did in 2008 for Enchanted Dolls.

After almost two years I've finally found the time to draw another illustration that reminds me of the Asian fairytales I loved to read when I was a young girl.

Western Movies Love and a new Cover!

I love Western movies. The discovery and exploration of the new frontier, adventures! I'm basically a fan of the so-called Italian 'Spaghetti Western' sub-genre, and of course I've seen 'The Dollars Trilogy' movies a lot of times! So, when I have been asked to draw a magazine cover based on popular fictional genres like sci-fi, fantasy , etc, etc, I of course thought I finally could do something Western related!
I sketched two different covers, you can see below the first drawings I did:

The first sketch was the one selected for the cover. I like this one, especially because I could draw horses! When I was a little girl, drawing horses as one of the things I loved the most. I remember when I was at Elementary School I spent almost a year drawing just horses all the day ^___^

The Circus Series - New commission!

After stuffing myself for Christmas, I'm back to the drawing board! So, let's start with a new private commissioned image based on my Circus series. The first Circus inspired illustration I drew was for Coyote Magazine, Summer 2008.

I think it's one of my most popular illustrations online, after probably a Romance of the Victorian Age!
Then, late 2008 I drew a second image based on the Circus World and it was used in the Table of Contents of my art- book published in 2009 (sorry for the poor quality photo!).

And the third in the series:

The client asked for something similar to my previous illustrations, especially in the use of colors - final image will be all red and yellow!

Good morning! I think this photo says a lot about what I'm doing in these days ^_^ I love crafting and making handmade Christmas decorations/tags/cards etc, etc
Unfortunately, I'm always late with anything - too many ideas, so few time, my recurring problem! - and like all the past years, I spend the Christmas eve working more in a day than the in the whole December month!

Anyway, I started the day by making myself a special Christmas gift and I bought online this super-cute Jun-Planning doll - Dal series:

Isn't she simply adorable? She reminds me of Gretel from the popular tale by Brothers Grimm! Just a little bit more 'Gothic Lolita' looking alike! I'm a fan of little Pullips - I don't like too much the bigger ones, but the small dolls are so cute!...I'm afraid my new obsession will be the Dal dolls, now!

Ok, while wishing you all a wonderful Christmas, I'm posting this small acrylic on canvas I painted yesterday.

My latest cover illustration for 'Le Cabaret Vert', a collection of short stories written by my good friend Estelle Valls de Gomis. The collection will be out soon in France from Lokomodo Editions.
Estelle's beautiful stories are about vampires and decadent dandies and ancient ages, written in a style that suggests the atmosphere of the books by the great writers from the XIX century. Very inspiring!

Time passed very fast, it's nearly 15 days since my last post! Needless to say, I'm quite busy with some 'old' projects and new ones are to come. I'll tell you more soon! Ok, let's start with my latest private commission, 'Poetry of Flowers'! It's based on a dream about two young sisters and set in a - something like - Victorian garden. I had been requested to use green and red as main colors for this image so...I tried to change my usual color pallette a little bit ^_-

And, a couple of new commissioned sketches. They're both drawings in progress and the final illustrations might be quite different from these!

Another illustration based on one of my never-ending, mad, personal art projects. The first after my last journey and before in few days I start working on a lot of new commissioned images - November and December will be two very exciting months!

A little bit about this image. First off, the killer whales are not jumping out of water, they're flying in some way and you know, I like drawing this kind of surreal, absurd illustrations sometimes! Anyway, it's a sort of fairytale image, and I love drawing whales, you know ^_____^ so I messed up a little bit, at last! The ornamental design on the girl dress is based on some very beautiful decorations I could admire during my stay in Uzbekistan. This journey was very inspirational and a mine of ideas for new decorative elements to use in my next drawings!

TataGala Exhibition.

Back from my last journey, I have news about another art exhibition. The below illustration was done before my leaving for a contest at TataGala.org, an event supporting the Breast Cancer Research.
Among almost 1000 entries, my illustration is one of the pieces that have been accepted to be in the Sarasota Exhibit, the show will start November 12th at Sarasota, Florida. Here you can find more info on the show.
The piece will be also available for purchase and a portion of the payment will be donated to charity.

Red Penny Papers Cover

In the past few days I worked on several commissioned images, one of these was for Red Penny Papers an online literary magazine. I had been requested to illustrate one of the stories that will be out end of October and written by the talented Camille Alexa.
It's a fantasy novella, with a Victorian almost steampunk aesthetic. Below are some of the sketches I did, I like trying different approaches to the same subject: when I have to work on a commission I usually do at least 3 or 4 different versions of the same theme. I want clients have the opportunity to pick up the illustration they prefer among different ones. And, I love sketching and doodling ^___^ While, it always takes me too much to ink and color the final drawing!

Let's start with the selected image. It's Roger, one of the characters of the story. The scene is set in a forest, I could pick up the scene I liked more between 4 situations taken from the novella. I drew different images of this scene, one portraiting also Augustine, another character from the story, and one with a carriage. Before you ask, the dogs look so big because in this tale the are greyhoundish in shape & proportion, but the height of horses or large deer.

This is an attempt to draw an action scene portraiting Augustine and deWinter during the Fire sequence.

Small Stuff Art show and sketches!

Let's start with a little bit of self-promotion ^_^ I'm one of the selected artists for the Bear and Bird Small Stuff Exhibition starting November 2010. I have four small pieces at this show, all are about 5x7 inchs large. The gallery and boutique is an extension of the fabulous Tate's, a store for comics, anime, toy collectors, etc, but also low-brow, urban vinyl, etc...

I'll like to start this new blog post by promoting the work by two fellow artists I admire a lot! My more recent comic book purchase was 'Spider Moon' first season by Kate Brown. I love Kate's style, the clean and curved lines of her images are so decorative! I'm attracted by anything is highly stylized, decorative and beautiful! When I look at Kate's illustrations I realize how mine is messy and chaotic!

And...the latest original faery illustration I bought on Etsy! This lovely image has been created by the talented Sara Butcher! She has such a soft touch and a delicate hand: her watercolors are truly stunning and inspirational!

And...after such beautiful images, my usual rubbish! Ok, as you probably know, I'm working on a lot of new projects/commissions in these days. Here a new image, based on a illustration I started working on a couple of years ago. I thought to use it for my Precious Things artbook published in 2009, but I lately changed my mind and I didn't finish it. You can't imagine how many incomplete images I could create in the past years ^______^

And what I'm doing now. I used the same girl's sitting, but different colors and added a background too. I would like to use this one - once it will be completed - for a contest/show. Wish me good luck for the selection!

Tutorials

Some deviants asked me for a tutorial, I think a writing about this matter might be helpful for anybody who follows me on deviantart.

Accept it, I've never made/written any tutorials ^_^ Reasons are the following:

1. I'm too lazy.
2. English is not my mother-tongue. Good tutorials are not just a list of photos/images. Images should be connected to a series of instructions. And instructions should lead the reader through the key features of a technique. Obviously they should be written in a good English. I can't organize nothing like that and I don't feel like doing it!
3. There's not any secret in what I do. Unlike me, many of you are art-students or you took art lessons in the past. Honestly, you should teach me how to draw! You just need to spend a little bit of time observing my illustrations to understand 'the secrets'of my technique. Some deviants have copied my style so carefully that I think you can achieve the same goal without any specific tutorials from my part. Of course, I strongly talk you out of merely copying someone else's way of drawing/coloring! It's stupid and fruitless!

I recently completed a couple of new illustrations based on The Cloud Maiden, my comic book personal project. I posted online 'Machines' few days ago, so you probably already know about it. I remember of having made an illustration with the same title a lot of time ago! I don't have a great imagination for titles ^_^ But, I have a passion for girls having extrasensory perceptions or ESP, if you prefer. I can't say more about characters and story yet - sooner or later I MUST traslate into English all the writings/plots/anything I did about this project! - but well...I think the illustration speaks for itself ^_^

Of fairy tales and artwork. Part two!

I wouldn't never supposed my previous entry could provoke so many comments and so different opinions about the same argument, I mean: my illustrations are not suitable for young readers...or to make it clear, my style is too gloomy to illustrate a book for children.

I understand we could discuss this matter for days, without finding the best solution to it! It's also a question about what you like and what you dislike. Personal tastes, you know?

What I say now it's what comes from my personal experience, and it means that my opinion is not a unquestionable truth. And I'm often ironical in what I write ...

Let's start with: geography!

I'm Italian and I live in Italy. What I write and I what I post to 'Angels and Insects' often refers to the Italian/European situation. I need to say that because about the 70% of people who follow this blog are not Italian and most important, are not European. Publishing conditions/circumstances might differ in Europe if compared to the ones you can find in US or Australia or Far East countries. I don't mean they are worse or better, I mean they're VERY different sometimes. There're marked differences inside Europe as well. For example, the same book can be a best-seller in France and a complete fiasco in Italy. Education system also varies widely from country to country. An art editor who lives and works in UK could have a completely different cultural and scholastic background than an art editor who lives and works in Italy and obviously different opinions on the same art matter. The plot thickens!

I apologize for this boring introduction, but I would like to clarify why I'm used to post very discouraging entries sometimes ... not often, luckily! I hate complaining and whining ^_^ but you know, it happens that you feel a little bit disappointed! Anyhow, I understand some of my entries might seem completely out of place if you can't refer to their causes. I'm sorry if my writing was muddled.

To get back to the subject, people who live in Italy commented on my previous post by saying:"You're right!", people who don't live in Europe said:"You're wrong!" ^_^

It's not so clear and definite of course, you can find good dark books for children in Italy too but often the situation is the one I mentioned before.

I should add that in the past one of the [kind] refusal I got, came from a French author who underlined how my style was gloomy ^_^ Others came from art editors that I suppose they are all professional in their approach to the problem. They love what I do but all stress the fact I should be more colorful and brighter if I want to illustrate books for children.

I repeat, finally it's also a matter of what you like and what you don't like, but I think that your cultural background or simply what is cool and what is not in the art market now might affect the opinion of an art editor or an author. It's not a criticism, just a reflection.

That said, I never give up, of course! First because I need to improve a lot, both technically and artistically then because I believe in what I do and I enjoy illustration!

Of folk tales projects...

By popular request, I completed the first illustration for my Folk Tales Project! I started dreaming of making an illustrated book about Italian Folk tales some years ago, when I was making the illustrations for the 'Art of Faery' art-book. Unfortunately I couldn't throw myself into this project heart and soul for a lot of time. At the end of 2009, I tried to begin illustrating at least one tale but my attempt had failed. I was unconsciously persuaded to be unable to make illustrations for a young audience, and honestly a lot of people tried to argue me out of illustrating fairy tales or literature for children. My style is too much 'dark and gloomy' - too much Arthur Rackham, to make it quite clear ^_^ - while illustrations for young people should be colorful and bright. I partially agree. I mean, it's all about the story. If the story/tale/novel is sad and tragic I think images should reflect it. Although many folk tales are considered to be told for everybody, they contain deep psychological issues and they are bawdy and often violent. I simply can't imagine the artwork for a fairytale like Hansel and Gretel done in 'psychedelic' super-sweet colors! As I'm sure not all the kids in the world enjoy Disney's stuff!
But it seems that in the 21th century simply you can't illustrate a book about fairy tales in the style of Old Masters. Don't ask me why... I'm just an humble illustrator!

That said, I had to give up this project months ago. But I'm stubborn as a mule and I've started finally doing the storyboard and the first sketches. I have no idea if I'll succeed in it, but since I enjoyed doing this illustration and the whole project, I think I don't give up! And maybe I can publish it, one day!

Btw Monika, have I ever told you that I love your blog name? ^_^ She asked for a girl dressed in shreds of lace and silk in a forest, with ruins and some gothic buildings ...well, honestly her description was very accurate and the idea inspirational! That said, I think my final illustration is a complete flop! Anyway, here it is...and I also posted a little wip of the image ^_^

This is another requested illustration, the 15 years old Chocho-San - Madama Butterfly - from the popular Italian opera.

The story is set in Nagasaki at the beginning of 20th century, and I'd like to make the drawing looking alike a vintage photo, all colored in sepia tones. Anyway, since I'm working on many new images in these days, I have no idea when I can complete this.
